Scientific Committee

During the meeting of the Board of Directors on the 3 July 2020 its President, Cardinal Pietro Parolin named, as ruled by Article 11 of the Statute, the members of the Scientific Committee appointing personalities «of proven competence and experience», to be elected ad quinquennium. He also appointed the Foundation's Vice President, dr. Stefania Falasca, as Coordinator, thus putting in motion its activity.

Furthermore during this first phase of activity of the Foundation, the Board of Directors, acting in accordance with comma 5 of Article 11 of the Statute, ruled that because of their specific competences, the Prefect of the Vatican's Apostolic Archive, His Excellency Monsignor Sergio Pagano and the Prefect of the Vatican's Apostolic Library, Monsignor Cesare Pasini were also to be co-opted into the Scientific Committee.

Prof. Carlo Ossola

(Turin 1946) philologist and literary critic. Professor at the Collège de France in Paris (Chaire de Littératures modernes de l'Europe néolatine). Previously Professor of Italian literature at Geneva University (1976); from 1982 to 1988 taught Italian literature at the Faculty of Magistero at Padua University; he then taught Italian literature at Turin University's Faculty of Letters (1988-1999). From 2007 to 2016 he was director of the Institute of Italian studies (ISI) at the University of the Italian speaking part of Switzerland based in Lugano. He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, the Accademia d'Arcadia, the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, the Accademia Olimpica di Vicenza, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and since 2018 Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. He is also a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana; co-director of the publication «Lettere Italiane» and «Rivista di storia e letteratura religiosa». His cultural interests lie in Italian and European literature from the origins to our contemporary age. Regarding his interest in Renaissance culture, worthy of note are Autunno del Rinascimento. «Idea del Tempio» dell'arte nell'ultimo Cinquecento reedited in an enriched version in 2014. Among the Italian authors of the twentieth century, his loyalty lies with Giuseppe Ungaretti, relevant in this respect are: an essay by the title of Giuseppe Ungaretti (1975), an edition of collected poems for «I Meridiani»: Ungaretti. Vita d’un uomo. Tutte le poesie, edited by C.Ossola, (2009) and Traduzioni poetiche (2010); and furthermore another essay by the title of Ungaretti, poeta (2016). He exercises a vast sphere of activity in the philological field. In particular, worthy of note are rare unedited editions by Juan de Valdés, Emanuele Tesauro, Jacques Bénigne Bossuet, Alessandro Rossi, Cesare Cantù, Waldemar Deonna, Roger Caillois, Massimo Olivetti, Michel de Certeau, Charles de Foucauld, Roland Barthes, Dag Hammarskjöld, as well as anthologies devoted to baroque literature. Moreover he has dedicated indepth studies relating to the tradition of literary institutions in schools. Together with Carlo Segre he directed the Antologia della poesia italiana (3vol., 1997-99) for the «Biblioteca della Pléiade»» Einaudi-Gallimard. He then edited the eight volumes of Letteratura  italiana: canone dei classici (2012) published by UTET. Amongst his recent essays are: Il continente interiore (2010), for which he received the “Cesare Pavese award” for nonfiction; Introduzione alla Divina Commedia (2012) “award Fondazione De Sanctis” for nonfiction); A vif, la création et les signes  (2013); Charles de Foucauld, Déserts, édition et préface de C.Ossola, Payot et Rivages, Paris 2013; Erasmo nel notturno d'Europa (2015); Italo Calvino. L'invisibile e il suo dove (2016).

Prof. Dario Vitali

(Edolo, 1956), director of the department of Dogmatic Theology of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and Professor of Ecclesiology. A priest of the diocese of Velletri-Segni, he earned his academic qualifications in theology under the guidance of Zoltán Alszeghy. For many years he dedicated himself to pastoral ministry as parish priest of the diocese of Velletri-Segni while pursuing a teaching career at Latina's Istituto di Scienze Religiose and Anagni's Istituto Teologico Leoniano. In 2001 Queriniana published Nuovo Corso di teologia sistematica. Vol.14: Esistenza cristiana. Fede, speranza e carità. Furthermore Studium editions published: Parresia ovvero la Parola nella potenza dello spirito (2003); Lumen gentium. Storia, commento e recezione (2012); Popolo di Dio (2013); Verso la sinodalità (2014); «Un popolo in cammino verso Dio». La sinodalita in Evangelii gaudium (2018).

Prof. Gilfredo Marengo

(Alba, 1955), vice dean of the John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences at the Pontifical Lateran University and professor of Theological Anthropology since 2013. Ordained to the priesthood in 1979 in the diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. As from 2018 he is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Studium-Roma editions and from 2012 also of the Scientific Committee of the Centre for Studies and Research 'Concilio Vaticano II'. In 2009 he edited the final issue of the catechesis of John Paul II on human love: L'amore umano nel piano divino. In 2018 the Libreria Editrice Vaticana (Vatican publishing house) published the history of the drawing up of 'Humanae vitae': La nascita di un enciclica. Humanae vitae alla luce degli Archivi Vaticani.

Prof. Mauro Velati

(Novara, 1962) earned a research doctorate in Religious History from Bologna University. He collaborated with the John XXIII Foundation for Religious Sciences, editing for Mulino the publication of this pope's diary: Pater Amabilis. Agende del pontefice, 1958-1963. (2007). Mulino also published a number of his essays among which: Una difficile transizione. Il cattolicesimo tra unionismo e ecumenismo (1952-1964). (1996); Separati ma fratelli. Gli osservatori non cattolici al Vaticano II (1962-1963). (2014). He contributed towards the Inquisitio dioecesana suppletiva of the Cause for the canonisation of John Paul I by conducting research at the Historic Archive of the Patriarchate of Venice and at the Archive of the Episcopal Conference of Triveneto-Mestre-Zelarino. Moreover he wrote up the section of the Positio's Biographia ex documentis relating to Albino Luciani's years in Venice.

Prof. Diego Sartorelli

(Venezia, 1969) held the post of pro-chancellor at the Venetian Curia and in 2008 was appointed director of the Historic Archive of the Patriarchate of Venice. Since 2015 he is also director of the 'Benedict XVI' diocesan Library. In the course of the supplementary diocesan Inquiry of the Cause for the canonisation of John Paul I he supervised the work related to examining the documentary material of the Albino Luciani Archive, right until the final notes of the Luciani papers were ready to be handed over to the Vatican. Ordained to the priesthood in 1994, since 2015 he is Professor of History of the local Church at the Theological Study Centre of Venice's Patriarchal Seminary.

Dott. Loris Serafini

(Canale d’Agordo, 1977) is director and curator of the Papa Luciani Foundation and of the Albino Luciani Birthplace House Museum at Canale d'Agordo. After obtaining a degree in Languages at the University of Trento, he graduated in Archival studies, Paleography and Diplomacy from the State Archive of Trieste. In his capacity as archivist he dedicated himself to the sorting out of both ecclesiastical and private archives in the Veneto region collaborating with various institutions. And in this same capacity as archivist, from 2003 to 2006 he was a member of the Historical Commission for the diocesan Inquiry of the Cause for the canonisation of John Paul I.
